Ngày nay, vấn đề ô nhiễm môi trường đã và đang ngày càng trở nên nghiêm trọng hơn ở Việt Nam. Trên các phương tiện thông tin đại chúng hằng ngày, chúng ta có thể dễ dàng bắt gặp những hình ảnh, những thông tin về việc môi trường bị ô nhiễm. Bất chấp những lời kêu gọi bảo vệ môi trường, tình trạng ô nhiễm càng lúc càng trở nên trầm trọng. Điều này khiến ta phải suy nghĩ…

Theo bản tổng kết môi trường toàn cầu do Chương trình Môi trường Liên Hợp Quốc (UNEP) Hà Nội và Tp. HCM nằm trong danh sách 6 thành phố ô nhiễm không khí nghiêm trọng nhất thế giới. Về nồng độ bụi, hai thành phố lớn nhất Việt Nam này chỉ đứng sau Bắc Kinh, Thượng Hải, New Delhi và Dhaka. Việc phá hoại môi trường của một người tuy chỉ ảnh hưởng nhỏ nhưng tập hợp nhiều người lại là lớn. Trách nhiệm bảo vệ môi trường tuy cũng có một phần là của nhà nước nhưng đa phần lại là của người dân. Và những việc chúng ta làm đối với môi trường, tuy hiện giờ ta chưa thấy được, nhưng về lâu về dài nó sẽ ảnh hưởng tới ta ít nhiều.

Việt Nam thiếu những chính sách và quy định bảo vệ môi trường nghiêm ngặt và do đang thu hút mạnh các nguồn vốn đầu tư để phát triển nên dễ mắc vào "cạm bẫy": trở thành nơi tiếp nhận nhiều ngành công nghiệp "bẩn". Ví như, ngành cán thép làm tốn nhiều tài nguyên như đất, nước, năng lượng, thải ra những chất thải nguy hại cho môi trường. Ngoài ra, lượng xe cô lưu thông ngày càng nhiều ở nước ta cũng góp phần không nhỏ vào việc gây ô nhiễm bầu không khí.

Một cách khác để giúp bảo vệ môi trường phát động thường xuyên hơn những phong trào tình nguyện như bảo vệ môi trường khu dân cư, dọn rác ở các khu vực công cộng, làm sạch bãi biển...
