Đến nay hai nước Việt Nam – Lào đã tổ chức được 51 tuyến vận tải hành khách do hơn 45 doanh nghiệp thực hiện với khoảng 270 xe khai thác trên tuyến, đáp ứng một phần nhu cầu vận tải hành khách giữa hai nước. Hoạt động vận tải hàng hóa chủ yếu đáp ứng nhu cầu giữa các tỉnh giáp ranh và một phần hàng hóa quá cảnh tới các cảng, phương tiện vận tải chủ yếu là các loại xe tải chở hàng cỡ vừa và lớn.
3.1.4 Cơ sở hạ tầng hệ thống đường bộ kết nối
Hiện tại hệ thống đường bộ kết nối giữa Việt Nam – Lào tương đối đầy đủ từ Bắc tới Nam với 13 tuyến đường chính được đầu tư xây dựng theo tiêu chuẩn tối thiểu cấp IV của Lào và cấp V của Việt Nam, chỉ có một số khu vực miền núi với địa hình khó khăn ở phía các tỉnh Điện Biên – Phongsaly – Loungprabang, Thanh Hóa – Houaphan, hệ thống đường bộ còn thưa thớt và cơ sở hạ tầng chưa đảm bảo cho giao thông thông suốt theo các mùa. Hệ thống đường chính kết nối giữa hai nước được thể hiện trong bảng dưới đây.
