Để đáp ứng yêu cầu đó cá rô phi vằn dòng GIFT được nhập vào Viện Nghiên cứu Nuôi trồng Thuỷ sản 1 từ Philippine và được sử dụng làm vật liệu ban đầu cho chương trình chọn giống theo phương pháp gia đình, cá rô phi chọn giống có tốc độ tăng trưởng tăng thêm 16,6% (Nguyễn Công Dân và ctv, 2001). Qua 6 thế hệ chọn giống đã có sinh trưởng tăng thêm 36% so với cá GIFT nhập nội ban đầu (NOVIT 4). Cá rô phi chọn giống thể hiện ưu thế hơn so với các giống cá rô phi khác hiện có ở các địa phương về sinh trưởng, đặc biệt khi nuôi trong môi trường nước ngọt. Nghiên cứu của Lê Thanh Hải (2007) chỉ ra rằng tốc độ tăng trưởng của dòng NOVIT 4 cao hơn dòng GIFT, kế tiếp là dòng Việt. Như vậy, tốc độ tăng trưởng của cá rô phi đơn tính đực được tạo ra bằng phương pháp xử lý hoóc môn dòng NOVIT 4 và dòng GIFT phần nào thể hiện tính vượt trội về tốc độ tăng trưởng so với các dòng cá Việt
