Trong kế hoạch phát triển kinh tế xã hội của chính phủ giai đoạn 2006-2010, Việt Nam lập kế hoạch giảm tỷ suất chết bà mẹ xuống còn 60 trên 100.000 ca sinh sống cho đến năm 2010, được Liên hợp quốc đánh giá cao. Việt nam cần phải có nhiều nỗ lực hơn nữa nhằm đạt được thành tựu này cũng như mục tiêu phát triển thiên niên kỷ là giảm 75% tỷ suất chết bà mẹ vào năm 2015.
