Trong năm 2014, tổng sản lượng hàng hóa container thông qua hệ thống cảng biển cả nước đạt 10,240 nghìn TEU, tăng 16.2% so với cùng kỳ. Trong giai đoạn từ 1999 - 2014, sản lượng hàng hóa container luôn tăng trưởng đều đặn qua các năm, với mức bình quân 17.43%/năm. Trong đó, sản lượng hàng hóa thông qua khu vực miền Nam chiếm tỷ trọng lớn nhất 66.6%, khu vực miền Bắc và miền Trung lần lượt chiếm tỷ trọng 30.5% và 2.9%.
