Trước khi thực hiện kiểm kê, cần đảm bảo mọi giao dịch nhập/xuất kho trong thực tế đã được nhập vào hệ thống để tránh bất cứ sai biệt do vấn đề nhập liệu gây ra.​Khởi tạo chứng từ kiểm kê kho (Inventory counting) với các thông tin: danh sách hàng hóa vật tư, kho, số lượng kiểm đếm, người phụ trách kiểm đếm đồng thời thực hiện đóng băng (Freeze) toàn bộ các mã hàng hóa vật tư để chắc chắc các hàng hóa vật tư trong danh sách kiểm đếm không được phép giao dịch cho đến khi việc kiểm kê hoàn tất.
