Cadimi (Cd) là một kim loại quý hiếm nó không có chức năng về sinh học thiết yếu nhưng lại có tính độc hại đối với thực vật và động vật.Tuy nhiên, dạng tồn lưu của cadimi thường bắt gặp trong môi trường không gây độc cấp tính.
Cd tồn tại ở nhiều dạng như có trong khói thuốc lá, thực phẩm, trong cơ thể,… và gây ra nhiều loại bệnh như nhiễm độc gan cấp tính và mãn tính, nhiểm độc máu, xương mãn tính nhiễm độc trong hệ thống miễn dịch, nhiễm độc trong xương,.. Cd sinh ra từ nhiều con đường như sản sinh từ đát mẹ, từ phân bón, lắng tụ từ bụi, từ bùn thải cống rãnh, do hoạt động khai thác mỏ kim loại, chất thải công nghiệp và nhiều nguồn khác nhau. Sự hoạt hóa của Cd trong đất rất quan trọng, quá trình này xác định rõ sự ảnh hưởng của kim loại trong đất tồn tại ở dạng ion nhiều hơn dạng nguyên tố như hàm lượng Cd trong môi trường đất, các yếu tố Ph,.. Từ các kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy mức ảnh hưởng Cd trong đất là rất cao, như một số vùng trồng lúa ở phái Tây Nam tp HCM (Nhà Bè và Bình Chánh).
Việc xử lý và làm sạch Cd trong đất hết sức khó khăn và tốn kém. Chính vì vậy cần có biện pháp ngăn chặn từ đầu.
