Chàng trai khi ấy mới 20 tuổi bắt đầu đi thuyết phục chính quyền địa phương và người dân trong vùng cùng chung tay bảo vệ rùa. Người đàn ông chia sẻ rằng đã gặp rất nhiều khó khăn khi bắt đầu bảo tồn loài rùa: "Người ta bảo tôi điên, không đánh bắt giết rùa thì sống bằng gì".

Ban đầu một mình Imade lang thang khắp nơi tìm rùa mắc bệnh hoặc trôi dạt đến đảo và đưa về nhà chăm sóc. Anh cho rùa đẻ trứng, ấp nở con rồi đưa rùa con về biển và thả rùa mẹ về tự nhiên. Dần dần các thành viên gia đình cùng làm với Imade, sau đó cả làng đều chung tay chăm sóc rùa, hồi hộp cứu hộ rùa con và vui sướng khi thả chúng về biển. Số lượng rùa sống tại đảo ngày càng nhiều lên.
