Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula long, surrounded on the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the east by the Adriatic Sea. The country borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia in the north. Alps form the backbone of the peninsula; and also the northern border. The northern part of the lake's largest lakes is Garda (143 sq mi; 370 km square); Po, the main river, which flows from the Alps on Italy's western border through Lombardy Plain on the Adriatic Sea.
