Hằng ngày một lượng lớn nước thải được xả trực tiếp hoặc gián tiếp ra ngoài môi trường mà chưa qua xử lý gây ô nhiễm nghiêm trọng nguồn nước. Hậu quả trước tiên là gây mất cân bằng sinh thái, một số loài sinh vật bị tuyệt chủng do không thích nghi với nguồn nước bị ô nhiễm. Tiếp đến là ảnh hưởng đến con người chúng ta. Nước bị ô nhiễm gây các bệnh: da liễu, đường ruột… và hơn nữa là các bệnh mà thế giới cũng chưa có phương thức cứu chữa như: ung thư… Chính vì vậy mà chúng ra cần xử lý nước thải ngay tại nguồn để giảm thiểu những tác hại của nước thải đến môi trường.
