Vai trò của kỹ năng viết trong chương trình phổ thông hiện nay (cụ thể là sách giáo khoa Tiếng Anh 9 – Chương trình đổi mới) chủ yếu là nhằm phối hợp với các kỹ năng lời nói khác để làm phong phú thêm các hình thức luyện tập trên lớp cũng như các bài tập ở nhà nhằm củng cố thêm những kiến thưc đã học, đồng thời giúp học sinh bước đầu làm quen với văn phong, cấu trúc chặt chẽ của văn viết và học cách sử dụng hoạt động viết vào một mục đích đơn giản như: viết thư, viết địa chỉ, nhắn tin, điền vào các tờ khai, tờ đơn,…
