Nằm giữa trung tâm thủ đô Hà Nội, chùa Một Cột được xây dựng từ năm 1049 với mục đích tái hiện lại một giấc mơ của vua Lý Thái Tông. Khi đó, nhà vua đã nằm mơ thấy một ngôi đền bay lơ lửng trên một ao sen. Ngôi chùa được xây dựng bằng gỗ và nằm trên một cây cột duy nhất.

Ngôi chùa được thiết kế giống như một bông hoa sen với những đường trạm trổ tinh vi đẹp mắt. Ngôi chùa chúng ta thấy ngày nay đã được phục dựng lại nguyên bản ban đầu sau khi bị phá hủy trong chiến tranh.
