Cạnh tranh trong ngành ngân hàng ngày càng khốc liệt vì từ ngày 1/1/2011 Việt Nam chính thức mở cửa cho các ngân hàng nước ngoài hoạt động không giới hạn, được phép kinh doanh tất cả các dịch vụ ngân hàng như ngân hàng trong nước.
Ngoài việc cạnh tranh với các đối thủ truyền thống là các ngân hàng lớn trong nước thì MB còn phải cạnh tranh với các ngân hàng nước ngoài có sẵn tiềm lực tài chính mạnh và trình độ quản lý chuyên nghiệp, công nghệ tốt hơn (điển hình là hệ thống Internet Banking) và các khách hàng ruột là các công ty từ nước họ đang hoạt động tại Việt Nam. Quan trọng hơn nữa là khả năng kết nối mạng lưới rộng khắp trên nhiều nước của Ngân hàng ngoại.
