Người cao tuổi hay người già là một thuật ngữ dùng để chỉ những người nhìn chung đã có nhiều tuổi. Lâu nay ta vẫn quen dùng khái niệm “người già”. Theo từ điển tiếng Việt, già tức là “ở vào tuổi có những hiện tượng sinh lý suy yếu dần trong giai đoạn cuối của quá trình sống tự nhiên”. Như vậy, về mặt thuật ngữ “người già” hoặc “người cao tuổi” cũng chỉ là hai cách gọi khác nhau mang cùng một nội dung chỉ “người đã nhiều tuổi so với tuổi đời trung bình”. Theo quy định hành chính quốc tế, người từ 60 tuổi trở lên gọi là người cao tuổi. Trong đề tài này sử dụng thuật ngữ “người cao tuổi”.
