Albert, O.Hirshman (Áo), Gunnar Myrdal (Mỹ) phát triển lý thuyết cực tăng trưởng trong các vùng phân cực và nghiên cứu tác động lan tỏa của các trung tâm công nghiệp gắn liền với đô thị.
David Dapiece (2004) đã đánh giá thực trạng phát triển của các vùng kinh tế trọng điểm ở 3 vùng của Việt Nam.
Nghiên cứu của Trung tâm kinh tế quốc tế của Úc (CIE 2002) cho thấy có sự cách biệt đáng kể trong việc tối đa hóa lợi ích ở các vùng, đặc biệt giữa vùng KINH Tế TRọNG ĐIểM phía Nam so với vùng KINH Tế TRọNG ĐIểM miền Trung và miền Bắc.
Một số lý thuyết nổi bật như : Lý thuyết vành đai nông nghiệp của V. Thunen, lý thuyết tăng trưởng nội sinh của Clark và Fisher, lý thuyết về điểm trung tâm của Christaller hay lý thuyết cực tăng trưởng của François Perroux, v.v...Lý thuyết cực tăng trưởng của François Perroux đã từng được áp dụng rông rãi ở các nước ASEAN.
