Theo đánh giá của hội tài nguyên nước quốc tế ( IWRA) , hiện nay Việt Nam đang được xếp hạng vào nhóm quốc gia bị thiếu nước. Ước tính, lượng nước bình quân đầu người mỗi năm của người dân Việt chỉ là 3.840 m3, thấp hơn so với chỉ tiêu tối thiểu là 4.000m3/ người/ năm.
