Công việc dịch thuật đòi hỏi ở người dịch nhiều kỹ năng. Trước hết, đó là trình độ ngôn ngữ (cả ngôn ngữ nguồn –tiếng Anh và ngôn ngữ đích – tiếng Việt) phải cao. Ngoài ra, người dịch còn phải có vốn sống phong phú, kiên thức sâu rộng. Và một điều nữa, cũng như mọi ngành nghề khác, người dịch phải có thái độ cầu thị, không ngừng học hỏi để trau dồi, nâng cao trình độ của mình; làm việc nghiêm túc cẩn trọng, chỉ một thoáng bất cẩn là có thể xảy ra sai sót.

Dịch Anh – Việt là hoạt động chuyển đổi cách diễn đạt giữa hai ngôn ngữ Anh, Việt. Vì vậy cả tiếng Anh và tiếng Việtđều quan trọng như nhau. Nếu tiếng Anh kém sẽ ảnh hưởng đến khả năng hiểu nguyên bản (trong dịch Anh sang Việt) và khả năng diễn đạt (trong dịch Việt sang Anh). Nếu kỹ năng diễn đạt tiếng Việt không tốt sẽ làm giảm chất lượng bản dịch.
