Tiết diện cáp được chọn theo điều kiện phát nóng cho phép và kiểm tra theo điều kiện tổn thất điện áp cho phép.
Khi có dòng điện chạy qua cáp vật dẫn bị nóng, nếu nhiệt độ dây cáp quá cao có thể làm chúng bị hư hỏng hoặc giảm tuổi thọ. Mặt khác độ bền cơ của kim loại dẫn điện bị giảm xuống. Do vậy nhà chế tạo qui định nhiệt độ cho phép đối với mỗi loại dây cáp.
Do đó dây cáp được chọn phải thỏa mãn điều kiện sau:
k. Icp > Ilvmax
Trong đó:
Ilvmax là dòng điện làm việc cực đại của cáp.
Icp là dòng điện cho phép ứng với cáp đã chọn.
k là hệ số điều chỉnh nhiệt độ. Tra PL 4.21 (TL 1) có k = 0,63
* Dòng điện làm việc cực đại của TBA là:

Với Sđm là công suất định mức của máy biến áp cung cấp cho một đơn nguyên.
