Thiên tai, vụ ô nhiễm do Formosa gây ra, và xuất khẩu gặp khó khăn đã làm cho chính phủ Việt Nam phải hạ mục tiêu tăng trưởng GDP. Tại một cuộc họp chính phủ hồi đầu tháng 10, Thủ tướng Nguyễn Xuân Phúc nói mục tiêu mới của năm 2016 là GDP tăng trong khoảng từ 6,3-6,5%. Các con số này thấp hơn so với mục tiêu 6,7% do Quốc hội đặt ra hồi tháng 11 năm 2015
