Ngày 31/12/2015, chúng ta cũng cùng các nước trong khối ASEAN chính thức xác lập Cộng đồng Kinh tế ASEAN (AEC).

AEC là khu vực có dân số 600 triệu người, tổng sản lượng (GDP) hằng năm khoảng 2.000 tỉ USD và là nền kinh tế đứng thứ 7 thế giới.
Sản xuất thép thô của các nước AEC khoảng 22 triệu tấn và nhu cầu tiêu thụ hàng năm khoảng 68 triệu tấn thép.AEC là thị trường xuất khẩu chính của Việt Nam trong 5 năm trở lại đây. Năm 2015, Việt Nam xuất siêu sang các nước AEC khoảng hơn 1,2 tỷ USD. Năm 2016, khi Formosa Hà Tĩnh đi vào sản xuất, ngành thép Việt Nam trở thành quốc gia sản xuất thép lớn nhất trong khu vực.
