Francisco de Pina is a Catholic cleric, he was born in 1585 in the city of Guarda, Portugal. In 1611, he went to Macau, started studying at the University of Saint Paulo until 1617. Here he had dealings with João Rodrigues, and jointly compiled a record book in Japanese with Latin letters. It is thought that the latter Pina used this recording to record Vietnamese.
Early in 1617, he went to Da Nang and started preparing for their missionary work in Hoi An. In 1618, he moved to Quy Nhon and worked there until his death. To facilitate the preacher, Pina began studying Vietnamese. But he can not afford to hire the best teachers, so he asked the pupil who taught his Vietnam Vietnamese, on the contrary, he would teach them Portuguese. He started taking notes and compiling vocabulary Vietnamese circa 1622-1623, before Alexan de Rhodes to Vietnam one year. After A.Rhodes to Vietnam in 1624, they met in Hoi An and Pina began teaching Vietnamese for A.Rhodes. May 12/1625, Pina died in one accident, when he was 40 years old and could not see their achievements. His achievements have been Alexan de Rhodes inherited and developed. Can u say Pina was the first European fluent Vietnamese and he was a pioneer in the development of script.
