Ngoài văn học Việt Nam thì văn học Mỹ là mảng văn học mà tôi yêu thích nhất. Văn học Mỹ chính là niềm cảm hứng vô bờ bến cho những chuyến phiêu lưu không hồi kết trên các trang chữ dài thênh thang. Văn học Mỹ phát triển qua nhiều giai đoạn khác nhau, mang những đặc trưng tiêu biểu mà những nền văn học khác khó có thể có được. Trong các giai đoạn phát triển của nó, tôi đặc biệt chú ý đến giai đoạn văn học hiện đại 1914-1939, bởi vì thời kì này, hầu hết các tác phẩm đều phản ánh những thay đổi của xã hội,chĩnh trị cũng như văn hóa của nước Mỹ một cách hết sức chân thực khiến người đọc dễ dàng hiểu và hình dung ra nước Mỹ lúc bấy giờ. Hemingway là một trong những nhà văn tiêu biểu ở giai đoạn này và Hemingway cũng là nhà văn giúp tôi duy trì cảm hứng với văn học Mỹ tới bây giờ. Có nhiều lý do khiến tôi yêu thích Hemingway. Đầu tiên,tôi khâm phục bởi tài năng của ông, tôi đã từng tiếp xúc với các tác phẩm văn học của ông khi còn học trung học phổ thông. Đó là tiền đề để tôi dễ dàng tìm hiểu về ông sau này. Thứ hai, chính các tác phẩm của ông với cách viết vô cùng ngắn gọn, súc tích nhưng mang nhiều tầng ý nghĩa sâu xa thông qua nguyên lý “Tảng băng trôi” khiến người đọc phải suy ngẫm đã cuốn hút tôi. Hơn thế nữa, những chi tiết thú vị về cuộc đời ông khiến tôi muốn tìm hiểu kỹ hơn. Do đó, tôi đã yêu thích và tìm hiểu về ông từ những năm học trung học phổ thông.
Trong số các tác phẩm của ông. Tôi đặc biệt yêu thích hai tác phẩm: “ Ông già và biển cả” và “ Giã từ vũ khí”. Tôi thích tác phẩm ông già và biển cả bởi nó là một tác phẩm hay bằng chứng là nó đã từng đoạt giải Nobel văn học. Và thông qua tác phẩm ta có thể thấy được nghị lực phi thường của con người: Khi đơn độc nhưng vẫn lạc quan,vẫn theo đuổi niềm đam mê, không bỏ cuộc trước khó khăn bằng những ngôn từ đơn giản nhưng lối diễn đạt vô cùng lôi cuốn. Đây cũng là tác phẩm đầu tiên của ông mà tôi được tiếp xúc. Trong khi đó, giã từ vũ khí lại được xem như là một trong những tiểu thuyết chiến tranh vĩ đại nhất mọi thời đại. Tôi thích nó bởi nó chứa đựng những chi tiết chân thực về chính cuộc đời tác giả. Và tôi thích cách viết tài tình của ông khi có thể lồng ghép vào giữa cuộc chiến tranh đang diễn ra vô cùng khốc liệt một tình yêu nồng nhiệt giữa hai con người.
Đây là lí do tôi quyết định nghiên cứu và phân tích rõ hơn về Hemingway và hai tác phẩm của ông ấy: “ Ông già và biển cả” và “ Giã từ vũ khí” trong bài nghiên cứu này.
