Nhà máy lọc dầu Dung Quất (Quảng Ngãi) là công trình trọng điểm quốc gia, nhằm hình thành ngành công nghiệp lọc hóa dầu của Việt Nam, tạo điều kiện cho phát triển nhanh các ngành công nghiệp, dịch vụ liên quan. Công trình còn góp phần thúc đẩy phát triển và chuyển dịch cơ cấu kinh tế của miền Trung, từng bước tạo ra sự phát triển kinh tế cân đối giữa các vùng, miền trong cả nước. Điều này đáp ứng mục tiêu vừa phát triển kinh tế vừa ổn định xã hội của Chính phủ. Hơn nữa, Công trình trọng điểm quốc gia về dầu khí này cho phép chúng ta chế biến và gia tăng giá trị dầu thô khai thác trong nước, hạn chế nhập siêu và giảm bớt sự phụ thuộc vào nguồn cung cấp xăng dầu từ nước ngoài, đảm bảo từng bước về an ninh năng lượng. Năm 2010, tính từ khi bàn giao, NMLD Dung Quất đạt doanh thu 60.000 tỷ đồng, nộp ngân sách 10.000 tỷ đồng, sản phẩm đáp ứng 30% nhu cầu xăng dầu của cả nước.
