Nguyên công chúa Từ Hoa, con gái vua Lý Thần Tông (1128-1138) đã đem cung nữ tới khu vực này trồng dâu, nuôi tằm, mở ra trại Tàm Tang (tằm dâu). Trại này sau đổi tên là phường Nghi Tàm.
