Các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng là các phương tiện được sử dụng để truyền đạt thông tin một cách đại chúng, rộng rãi, tức là có khả năng đưa thông tin tới đối tượng đại chúng mục tiêu.

Ví dụ: báo in, tạp chí, phát thanh, truyền hình, sách, internet...
Theo đó phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng là một yếu tố trung gian có khả năng chứa đựng nội dung truyền thông đại chúng, chúng khác biệt với bản thân nội dung truyền thông đại chúng.
