Hoàng Thành Huế là vòng thành thứ 2 bên trong Kinh Thành Huế có chiều dài mỗi mặt thành khoảng 600m và gần như là vuông. Chiều cao khoảng 4, và dày 1m được xây bằng gạch vồ.

Hoành Thành và các Cung điện bên trong điều được bố trí trên một trục đối xứng gọi là trục Thần Đạo. Trong đó chính giữa trục Thần Đạo chỉ bố trí các công trình dành cho vua như cửa Ngọ Môn, cầu Trung Đạo, điện Thái Hòa, điện Cần Chánh, Cửa Hòa Bình.
Hai bên trục thần đạo tính từ trong ra ngoài được bố trí tuân theo nguyên tắc: Tả Văn Hữu Võ, Nam tả nữ Hữu hay Tả Chiêu Hữu Mục.
