Phần lớn số liệu trong kinh tế và kinh doanh là dãy số thời gian. Mục đích của phân tích dãy số thời gian là mô tả, phân tích mối liên hệ và dự báo. Chương 5 bắt đầu từ mô tả dãy số thời gian nhằm tìm hiểu xem dãy số có thể bao gồm các thành phần nào, có giá trị ngoại biên hay có thay đổi xu thế không. Việc mô tả chuỗi thời gian có thể đưa ra những gợi ý quan trọng cho việc lựa chọn mô hình dự báo với dãy số thời gian. Dự báo là một chủ đề khó nhưng lại rất quan trọng giúp cho việc lập kế hoạch phát triển kinh tế xã hội ở cấp quốc gia hay lập kế hoạch kinh doanh của một doanh nghiệp. Chất lượng của dự báo phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào việc lựa chọn mô hình dự báo phù hợp với chuỗi số liệu. Một số mô hình dự báo cơ bản sử dụng dãy số thời gian sẽ được đề cập ở chương này.
