Cũng theo nghiên cứu này tình trạng nghèo khổ do sóng thần gây ra sẽ phải mất nhiều năm mới khắc phục được. Trận động đất hôm 26/12/2004 đã cướp đi sinh mạng của 273000 người và làm 2 triệu người khác lâm vào cảnh nghèo đói. Indonesia bị ảnh hưởng nặng nề nhất với hơn 1 triệu người nghèo.
