Thúc đẩy chuyển dịch cơ cấu kinh tế, tạo thêm việc làm cho người lao động
Số dự án và vốn đăng ký FDI vào Việt Nam không ngừng tăng qua các năm, đặc biệt là từ năm 2007 đến nay. Hầu hết các địa phương đều có dự án FDI, nhiều tỉnh thành phố có vốn FDI trên 1 tỷ USD. Vốn FDI đã thúc đẩy cơ cấu kinh tế chuyển dịch theo hướng giảm tỷ trọng GDP và lao động trong nông nghiệp, tăng tỷ trọng công nghiệp, dịch vụ. Đến cuối năm 2013, khu vực có vốn đầu tư nước ngoài đã tạo việc làm cho 3,2 triệu người lao động (gấp 8,8 lần năm 2000).
Do đặc thù của FDI tập trung nhiều ở lĩnh vực công nghiệp và dịch vụ nên các hoạt động FDI đã góp phần chuyển dịch cơ cấu kinh tế theo hướng công nghiệp hóa – hiện đại hóa. Về cơ cấu vùng, đầu tư nước ngoài tập trung chủ yếu ở các vùng kinh tế trọng điểm đã góp phần làm cho các vùng này thực sự là vùng kinh tế động lực để lôi kéo sự phát triển chung và các vùng phụ cận.
