Trong chương trình đánh giá về Năng lượng cho Châu Á, Ngân hàng Thế giới đã có một khảo sát chi tiết về năng lượng gió khu vực Đông Nam Á, trong đó có Việt Nam. Theo tính toán của nghiên cứu này, trong bốn nước được khảo sát thì Việt Nam có tiềm năng gió lớn nhất và hơn hẳn các quốc gia lân cận là Thái Lan, Lào và Campuchia. Trong khi Việt Nam có tới 8,6% diện tích lãnh thổ được đánh giá có tiềm năng từ “tốt” đến “rất tốt” để xây dựng các trạm điện gió cỡ lớn thì diện tích này ở Campuchia là 0,2%, ở Lào là 2,9%, và ở Thái-lan cũng chỉ là 0,2%. Tổng tiềm năng điện gió của Việt Nam ước đạt 513.360 MW tức là bằng hơn 200 lần công suất của thủy điện Sơn La, và hơn 10 lần tổng công suất dự báo của ngành điện vào năm 2020.

In the program evaluation of energy for Asia, the World Bank had a detailed survey of wind power in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. According to the calculations of the research, in the four countries surveyed, the biggest wind potential are Vietnam and over the neighboring countries of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. While Vietnam has up to 8.6% of the total area of the territory is potentially evaluated from "good" to "very good" to build large wind power stations then this area in Cambodia is 0.2%, 2.9%, and is in Laos in Thai-lan is only 0.2%. The total wind power potential of Vietnam estimated to reach 513,360 MW i.e. by more than 200 times the capacity of the son La hydropower, and more than 10 times the total capacity of the electricity sector by 2020.

The total wind power potential of 513,360 MW Vietnam is estimated at more than 200 times that is by the power of the Son La hydropower, and more than 10 times the total capacity of the power sector forecast in 2020.
