Sau đó, vua Minh Mạng ban tặng cho cái tên Ngự Hải Đài có nghĩa là đài canh trên biển. Thời Pháp thuộc, nó được gọi là Hòn Sơn Chà (Trà). Hiện nay đảo có tên chính thức là đảo Hòn Chảo.
