Đối tượng nghiên cứu của đề tài là những vấn đề mang tính lý luận cũng như thực tiễn về thị trường trò chơi trực tuyến Việt Nam
Về mục đích nghiên cứu, dưới góc độ của những người làm kinh tế, mục đích của nhóm nghiên cứu khi thực hiện đề tài này là:
- Làm rõ khái niệm và phân loại trò chơi trực tuyến cùng một số khái niệm liên quan khác. Lịch sử ra đời và giới thiệu một số ngành công nghiệp game lớn trên thế giới cũng như sự xâm nhập và phát triển của trò chơi trực tuyến tại Việt Nam
- Khảo sát, đánh giá thực trạng của thị trường game online Việt Nam hiện nay: Nhu cầu, sở thích, thị hiếu của người chơi (gamer), vai trò của các nhà phát hành game, hệ thống phân phối và các dịch vụ liên quan cũng như khung pháp lý và các định hướng của Chính phủ nhằm phát triển ngành công nghiệp game Việt Nam
- Trong chừng mực nhất định, đưa ra những đề xuất của nhóm nghiên cứu nhằm giúp cho các cơ quan quản lý Nhà nước có biện pháp thích hợp để điều chỉnh hoạt động của thị trường game online, cũng như đưa ra phương hướng nhằm xây dựng một ngành công nghiệp game theo đúng nghĩa.
