Học Anh ngữ có nhiều phương pháp. Nếu bạn đã học qua bậc Trung học ở Việt Nam thì chắc hẳn bạn đã quen thuộc với phương pháp dùng ở học đường: Ngữ pháp và phiên dịch (Grammar-Translation). Đây cũng là một phương pháp thường dùng nhất trên thế giới và cũng là phương pháp cổ điển nhất. Người ta cho rằng biết ngữ pháp (văn phạm) thật nhiều và dịch giỏi là biết Anh ngữ! Nhưng sự thật có đúng như thế không? Bạn đã học theo phương pháp nầy trong nhiều năm mà rốt cuộc kết quả ra sao? Bạn không nghe được, nói được, cũng không viết được một câu tiếng Anh cho ổn. Ngoài ra bạn cũng rất lúng túng khi phiên dịch. Như thế chứng tỏ phương pháp Grammar-Translation không hữu hiệu. Thế nhưng tại sao người ta vẫn còn dùng phương pháp ấy ở nhiều nơi trên thế giới? Có hai lý do tại sao phương pháp nầy vẫn còn đang hiện dụng: Một là vì người ta không biết phương pháp nào tốt hơn và hai là người ta không có các giáo sư được huấn luyện chuyên môn để dạy Anh ngữ.
