Chỉ từ vào thế kỷ thứ II sau nhiều lần tìm tòi để có thể lấy một ngày nào đó trong năm làm ngày ra đời của Chúa Jésus vì không tìm thấy một dấu vết nào đề cập đến việc này trong các sách Phúc Âm. Nhiều ngày, tháng đã được đề nghị như ngày 6 tháng Giêng, ngày 25 tháng 3, ngày 10 tháng Tư…nhưng vẫn không dẫn đến một quyết định dứt khoát nào.
Tại La Mã, Giáo hội Thiên Chúa đã chọn ngày 25 tháng 12 làm ngày sinh của Chúa Jésus
