Theo số liệu của Tổng cục Hải quan, năm 2014, trị giá xuất khẩu hàng hóa của Việt Nam sang thị trường Thụy Sĩ đạt 263 triệu USD. Các mặt hàng chính gồm: đá quý, thủy sản, máy móc, giày dép, cà phê, dệt may, sản phẩm túi xách, ô dù và đồ dùng nội thất… Việt Nam nhập khẩu từ nước này kim loại quý, máy móc thiết bị, phụ tùng, hóa chất, tân dược, chất dẻo...
Trao đổi với VnExpress, ông Nguyễn Xuân Hồng - Cục trưởng Cục bảo vệ thực vật (Bộ Nông Nghiệp & Phát triển nông thôn) (Head of Plant Protection Department) cho biết châu Âu là một trong những thị trường chiến lược của hàng hóa Việt Nam, trong đó có mặt hàng nông sản. Hiện 28 quốc gia trong khu vực trong đó có Thụy Sỹ đã hoàn toàn mở cửa cho hàng hóa Việt Nam, nên gần như không còn bất kể hàng rào nào cản trở việc xuất khẩu nông sản sang thị trường này.
Theo đó, các mặt hàng được yêu cầu gồm rau tươi các loại theo mùa( rau cải, rau thơm, ớt tươi...) và một số quả. Trong đó, mãng cầu, vải, xoài, chôm chôm... có nhu cầu cao. Theo yêu cầu từ nước này, hàng nông sản Việt Nam phải đáp ứng các tiêu chuẩn chung của châu Âu mới được nhập khẩu.
Với lo ngại về chi phí vận chuyển (transportation cost) nông sản hiện nay, đại diện Bộ Nông nghiệp cho biết có nhiều lựa chọn (choices/ options) song với hàng chế biến, vẫn nên duy trì đường biển (should be shipped by seaway/ seaway should be …). Riêng với mặt hàng rau quả tươi thì phương án tối ưu vẫn là hàng không (airway). Hiện, một lượng đáng kể rau gia vị (herbal vegetables) của Việt Nam được vận chuyển bằng máy bay sang Thụy Sĩ và một số quốc gia trong khu vực này.
