Ngày 31-12-2015, Cộng đồng ASEAN sẽ chính thức ra đời. Đây là dấu mốc quan trọng trong lịch sử của ASEAN. Dưới mái nhà chung đó, các dân tộc ở Đông Nam Á sẽ chung sống, gắn kết, chia sẻ lợi ích và phát triển trên chặng đường mới của mình. Mặc dù chưa là hiện thực, nhưng ngay từ lúc này, sự kiện đó đang thu hút mối quan tâm của cộng đồng quốc tế.
Kể từ khi thành lập (ngày 08-08-1967) đến nay, ASEAN không chỉ phát triển về quy mô1, mà ngày càng phát huy vai trò đẩy mạnh hợp tác và liên kết khu vực, tăng cường đoàn kết, hiểu biết và tin cậy lẫn nhau giữa các dân tộc ở khu vực Đông Nam Á. ASEAN cũng là nhân tố hàng đầu thúc đẩy đối thoại và hợp tác vì hòa bình, an ninh, phát triển thông qua việc khởi xướng và giữ vai trò chủ đạo trong nhiều diễn đàn khu vực hiện có, với sự tham gia rộng rãi của các đối tác; đồng thời, là lực lượng có vai trò quan trọng ở châu Á-Thái Bình Dương.
