Tùy theo cách bố trí điện cực nối đất mà phân biệt nối đất tập trung hay nối đất mạch vòng.- Nối đất tập trung: thường dùng nhiều cọc nối đất và nối với nhau bằng các thanh nganghay cáp đồng trần. Khoảng cách giữa các cọc thường bằng hai lần chiều dài cọc để loại trừ hiệu ứng màn che. Nối đất tập trung thường chọn nơi đất ẩm, điện trở suất thấp, ở xa công trình.- Nối đất mạch vòng: các điện cực nối đất đặt theo chu vi công trình cần bảo vệ (cáchmóng từ 1-1,5m) khi phạm vi công trình rộng.
