Máy điều chỉnh điện áp đường dây đặt trong trạm hay trên dường dây như đã nêu trên dùng để giữ điện áp không đổi ở một điểm gọi là điểm điều chỉnh không phụ thuộc vào trị số của dòng điện và hệ số công suất của phụ tải. Điểm điều chỉnh thường được chọn ở đâu đó khoảng giữa máy điều chỉnh và cuối phát tuyến. Việc duy trì điện áp tự động được thực hiện bằng cách chỉnh định các phần tử điện trở và cảm kháng của một phần tử trong máy điều chỉnh gọi là bộ bù sụt áp đường dây.
