Sau khi được kiểm tra trình độ, dù trong nước tôi cũng khá tự tin về tiếng Anh nhưng khi đến đây mới thấy cái sự học nó bao la đến dường nào khi tôi được xếp… trên lớp vở lòng một bậc!
Cũng tốt thôi, tôi còn mong được vào lớp ABC để có thể học lại từ đầu nhưng như vậy cũng còn đỡ hơn phải nhảy ngang vào các lớp cao cấp, mỗi tuần tôi dành cho việc học bốn buổi tối, trong năm đầu tiên tôi phải đóng học phí cho trường nhưng đến năm thứ hai thì quỹ hổ trợ của liên bang đã cung cấp cho nên không phải đóng tiền học phí.
Trong năm đầu tôi được học với hai giáo viên, một ông Mễ với giọng phát âm nặng nề khó hiểu và một cô giáo Việt Nam nhưng hoàn toàn không được dùng tiếng Việt vào việc học, cô này đã dạy cho tôi viết chính tả, nghe, nói để có thể tạm tự tin khi bước vào lớp cao hơn.
