Tình trạng phá rừng tại khu rừng nhiệt đới Nam Mỹ Amazon thuộc lãnh thổ Brazil đang có chiều hướng giảm.

Theo thống kê chính thức do Bộ trưởng Môi trường Brazil Izabella Teixeira công bố ngày 26/11, trong thời gian từ tháng 8/2013 đến tháng 7/2014, khoảng 4.800km2 rừng Amazon đã bị phá hủy, giảm 18% so với một năm trước đó.

Mức này thấp hơn mục tiêu giảm diện tích rừng bị phá xuống 5.000 km2 mà Chính phủ Brazil đề ra và là mức thấp thứ hai được thống kê trong lịch sử.

Mức phá rừng Amazon thấp nhất được ghi nhận vào năm 2011-2012 là 4.570km2.

Kể từ năm 1988 khi Brazil thống kê diện tích rừng bị tàn phá, năm 2004 là năm kỷ lục về diện tích rừng bị phá hủy với hơn 27.000km2 rừng bị mất.
