Vừa qua, ông James Joseph Kendall (quốc tịch Mỹ) - người sáng lập nhóm Vì Hà Nội sạch (Keep Ha Noi Clean) cùng các bạn đã cùng nhau lội xuống con mương ở phường Yên Hoà (quận Cầu Giấy) để nhặt rác, làm sạch nước.
Chiều nay, Chủ tịch UBND TP Nguyễn Đức Chung đã đến thăm và trò chuyện cùng ông.
Ông Nguyễn Đức Chung khẳng định TP Hà Nội rất ủng hộ những việc làm đó.
Ông cho biết, hành động này thật sự nâng cao ý thức của mọi người với việc bảo vệ môi trường sống quanh mình cũng như xây dựng Thủ đô xanh, đẹp mọi lúc, mọi nơi.
“Thay mặt lãnh đạo TP và với tư cách cá nhân, tôi rất mong muốn ông cùng nhóm của mình tiếp tục kêu gọi, động viên những người bạn là người nước ngoài đang tham gia lao động, học tập tại TP Hà Nội tham gia tích cực các hoạt động vệ sinh môi trường”, ông Chung nói.
Bất ngờ khi Chủ tịch UBND TP Hà Nội đến thăm, ông Kendall chia sẻ, ông rất yêu TP Hà Nội với những nét văn hoá cổ kính và con người đáng mến. Ông muốn làm những việc thiết thực nhất để bảo vệ môi trường sống của người dân Hà Nội.
“Tôi ở Hà Nội được 3 năm. Là một giáo viên dạy tiếng Anh ở trường tiểu học Xuân La - Tây Hồ, tôi rất bận rộn với công việc của mình. Tôi và những người bạn muốn làm những việc cụ thể để tạo nên cảm hứng, lôi cuốn những người xung quanh", "ông Tây lội mương nhặt rác" nói.
Ông nhắc lại câu chuyện vài ngày trước, khi đi qua con mương ở phường Yên Hoà, do thấy chưa sạch nên đã cùng các bạn xuống vớt rác.

Cũng tại buổi gặp mặt, Chủ tịch UBND phường Yên Hoà Hoàng Trung Kiên cảm ơn chân thành ông Kendall và cho biết, nếu ông và các bạn tiếp tục có những chương trình tương tự ở phường Yên Hoà, nhân dân và chính quyền phường luôn sẵn lòng hỗ trợ hết sức mình.
Nhân dịp này, Chủ tịch UBND TP Hà Nội Nguyễn Đức Chung đã tặng anh James huy hiệu logo của TP Hà Nội và mời ông dự lễ trồng cây hưởng ứng ngày môi trường thế giới 5/6.
