The new technology is related in applying of silanes to surface treatments process of aluminum and other metals. All aspects of chromate conversion coatings can be duplicated by silane-containing processes.
Organofunctional silanes have emerged as a potential replacement of chromate conversion coatings. It has been reported that all of the capabilities of chromate treatments can be duplicated by silane processes. Examples are:
- The self-healing effect due to leaching of chromate ions can be duplicated by adding certain organic of inorganic inhibitors to the silane films;
- Similar to chromates, silanes can be either anodic or cathodic inhibitors, depending on the inhibitor package that is used;
- Silane films can be given a color by adding certain colorants that react with silanol groups so that they cannot leach out; this is useful for the use of silanes on a continuous coil line.
- Silanes provide inherently outstanding adhesion to many paint systems, similar to, or better than, chromate conversion processes.
There are also applications where silanes can be used that cannot normally be addressed by chromates. Some examples are:
- Anti-fingerprint coatings where silanes filled with nanoparticales can be used effectively;
- Coatings that protect against erosion corrosion;
- Coatings that can protect against microbiologically induced corrosion(MIC), and,
- Primers consisting of silanes, organic resins and nanoparticles (superprimers); such primers can replace both the conversion coating and the chromated primer, e.g., on aerospace aluminum alloys.
Base on the excellent properties of silanes, we have created the surpass product ( Surpass- 06P) in the best process for metal surface treatment prior to organic coating.

SURPASS – 06P PROCESS

1./ Scope

SURPASS – 06P is a mixture of Bis–silanes, multi-purpose, low-polluting liquid pre-paint treatment for galvanized steel, aluminum, cold-rolled steel and their alloys substrates. SURPASS – 06P can replace chromate conversion coatings in metal finishing industries.
SURPASS – 06P is added to the last water rinse of the pre-treatment process. After dry-up in an oven, Bis-silanes reacted with the metal substrate and formed an interface with a high density of MeOSi bonds and in the meantime built up a crosslinked silane film (i.e. SiOSi network) of an appreciable thickness.
SURPASS – 06P can be applied by Spray or immersion.

3./ Equipment

The tank and other equipment as pump, pipes, nuzzles ete. for use with SURPASS – 06P solution may be constructed of Stainless steel or suitable plastic, so that the contact does not contaminate the solution.

4./ The process

Degreasing/ Degreasing and Fe-phosphating/ water rinse/ DI.water rinse/ SURPASS – 06P/ Blow off.
Bath 1: Degreasing
- PP-F207: 1.5 – 2%.
- Temperature: 40 – 50oC, 1.5 – 2 min.
- Pressure: 1.0 – 1.5 bar.
Bath 2 : Degreasing and Iron-phosphating
- PP-F207: 3.5 – 4.5%.
- AD-F207: 0.5%.
- Temperature: 40 – 45oC; 1.5 – 2 min; 1.0 – 1.5 bar.
Bath 3 : Rinsing –tap water.
- 20 – 35oC; 1 min; 0.5 – 1 bar.
Bath 4: Rinsing – De-Ionized water (DI water)
- 20 – 35oC; 0.5 – 1 min; 0.5 – 1 bar.
Bath 5: SURPASS – 06P.
- 1.5 – 2%; 20 – 35oC; 0.5 min; 0.5 – 1.0 bar.
Blow-off : Blowing off the SURPASS – 06P residue solution by air knives
Drying : Object temperature 120 – 150oC for 6 – 10 min.

4.1 Degreasing

All metal surfaces to be treated with SURPASS – 06P should be free from grease, oil or other contaminations. The type of cleaner required depends on the amount and kind of soil, the equipment available and the alloy being treated.

4.2 Rinsing

After cleaning the metal must be thoroughly rinsed with water. Carrying cleaner into the SURPASS – 06P solution will interfere its chemical balance and will result in low quality of paint adhesion, corrosion resistance and also in excessive use of SURPASS – 06P. If possible de-mineralized water should be used in the rinse immediately prior to the SURPASS – 06P treatment as this will prolong the lifetime of the working solution.
