Câu chuyện kể rằng có hai người bạn thân cùng nhau đi qua sa mạc. Trời nóng bức đến độ họ trở nên gắt gỏng và cãi vã nhau. Một người bạn không kềm chế được nên đã tát vào mặt người kia. Người bị tát đau lắm, nhưng không nói lời nào, anh viết lên cát:
“Hôm nay, người bạn thân nhất của tôi đã tát vào mặt tôi”
Tuy ngạc nhiên, nhưng người tát bạn không hỏi lý do. Anh xin lỗi và cả hai tiếp tục lên đường. Họ đi mãi cho đến một ốc đảo. Vừa đến nơi, họ quyết định xuống tắm. Bỗng người bị tát lúc trước bị chuột rút và anh ta chới với giữa hồ, thế là người bạn kia nhảy xuống cứu anh. Khi tỉnh dậy, anh viết lên tảng đá :
“Hôm nay, người bạn thân nhất của tôi đã cứu mạng tôi”
Ngưòi bạn từng cứu và tát anh mới hỏi:
“Vì sao, sau khi tôi đánh anh, anh viết trên cát, mà bây giờ anh lại viết trên đá?”
Người bạn kia mỉm cười trả lời:
“Khi một người bạn gây đau đớn cho mình, mình nên viết trên cát, để cho ngọn gió rộng lượng lo quét nó đi, và khi một điều tuyệt diệu xảy ra, ta cần phải khắc ghi vào tảng đá của ký ức trong lòng, nơi không ngọn gió nào tẩy xóa được.”
Câu chuyện nhắc người ta nên quên đi những chuyện không hay và ghi nhớ những việc tình nghĩa. Đó là cách hành xử nhân hậu, có ảnh hưởng của tôn giáo, của "Từ bi hỷ xả " nhà Phật và bác ái kiểu Thiên Chúa giáo:" Nếu kẻ thù tát ta vào má phải thì ta chìa nốt má trái ra cho nó tát. Nếu nó lấy áo khoác thì đưa luôn cả sơ mi cho nó"... Người như vậy chắc chắn chả bao giờ có kẻ thù nữa...
Nhưng cuộc đời không đơn giản như thế. Có người không chiụ được nhục, không chịu được bất công nên bị xúc phạm thì nhất quyết phải tìm cách trả thù. Không rửa được hận chết không nhắm mắt. Chả thế mà người ta có câu "Trả thù mười năm vẫn không cho là muộn", trong khi có người lại nói: "Người quân tử không giận ai cách đêm"...Thật là mỗi người là một thế giới riêng.
Hồi còn học phổ thông, tôi nhớ mãi một đoạn tuỳ bút của ai đó:" Nếu kẻ thù kia bắt ta rút gươm ra khỏi vỏ thì ta sẽ là kẻ tra gươm vào vỏ cuối cùng". Để được tra gươm vào vỏ cuối cùng chắc chắn là gian nan, không dễ chút nào...
