Bao báp tuy là loài cây đẹp, nhưng không dễ dàng mọc ở mọi nơi. Một trong những vùng được chúng ưu ái chọn làm “đại bản doanh” chính là Madagascar. 6 trên tổng 8 giống bao báp chỉ mọc được ở đảo quốc này. Ngoài ra, du khách có thể trông thấy hai giống bao báp khác nữa tại các quốc gia châu Phi.

Trước tình hình này, chính phủ Madagascar đưa ra các biện pháp để cứu những hàng cây bao báp. Một trong số đó là kế hoạch tái trồng lại các rừng cây khổng lồ đi kèm những biện pháp bảo tồn.
