Điều dưỡng viên là một chuyên ngành

Điều dưỡng viên là một chuyên ngành được đào tạo ở các bậc khác nhau, cả từ trung cấp y tế cho đến các bậc cao như đại học, và sau đại học.
Trước đây ở nước ta điều dưỡng viên được coi như là y tá cho nên việc đào tạo điều dưỡng cũng là một trong các môn học mà y tá phải học. Tuy nhiên đến bây giờ thì điều dưỡng đã được tách biệt ra, là một nghề độc lập trong hệ thống y tế, được đào tạo có bài bản và hộ thống từ thấp đến cao.
Là người xuất hiện trong tất cả các tuyến của quy trình trị liệu, và phải thường xuyên tiếp xúc với người bệnh, làm các công việc nặng nhọc cho nên điều dưỡng viên cũng coi như là một nghề khó khăn và gặp rất nhiều thử thách.
Với một điều dưỡng viên mới tốt nghiệp trung cấp y tế thì chắc chắn là sẽ rất khó khăn khi mà chưa quen với việc phải tiếp xúc với nhiều người bệnh, tiếp xúc nhiều thời gian như thế.
Đầu tiên khi người bệnh nhập viện, điều dưỡng viên là người có trách nhiệm sơ cứu và đảm bảo các điều kiện sơ cứu như là băng bó, di chuyển… thậm chí trong các trường hợp điều dưỡng viên phải là người dìu hoặc mang người bệnh cho đúng quy cách để bệnh tình không nặng thêm, gây khó khăn trong việc cấp cứu.
Ngoài ta điều dưỡng viên còn là người phụ tá các bác sĩ, các chuyên viên y tế khác trong công việc điều trị, chăm sóc bệnh nhân.
Vì thế công việc của điều dưỡng viên rất vất vả. Nhiều bạn sinh viên mới tốt nghiệp trung cấp y tế hệ điều dưỡng ra, được trang bị kiến thức và thực hành đầy đủ nhưng cũng không đáp ứng được nhu cầu về áp lực công việc.
Hàng ngày điều dưỡng viên phải làm các công việc như phát thuốc, tiêm thuốc, ghi chép các hiện tượng bệnh lý, tình trạng sức khỏe của người bệnh.
Phối hợp với bác sĩ và các chuyên viên y tế khác trong việc chăm sóc sức khỏe, hồi phục chức năng cho người bệnh.
Vì thế ta sẽ thấy điều dưỡng viên xuất hiện nhiều hơn ở các khoa như hồi phục chức năng hay điều trị bệnh mãn tính.
Chính vì đặc điểm công việc như vậy cho nên điều dưỡng viên là một việc khá nguy hiểm bởi lẽ họ phải thường xuyên tiếp xúc với nguồn bệnh nhất là các bệnh có khả năng lây nhiễm cao.
Chính vì thế vấn đề an toàn lao động phải được tuân thủ nghiêm ngặt và kiểm tra sức khỏe định kỳ thường xuyên hơn.
Ngoài các chức năng, chăm sóc, thu thập và truyền lại thông tin, điều dưỡng còn là người đóng vai trò trong việc tư vấn các vấn đề chăm sóc sức khỏe cho người, thậm chí là công việc đảm bảo các yêu cầu về chăm sóc người bệnh.
Vai trò của người điều dưỡng viên cũng dần được nâng lên khi được giao các trọng trách về quản lý.
