Mỗi người đều được phép tự do lựa chọn và tuân theo tôn giáo của mình. Khoảng 1/3 dân số Đức không có tín ngưỡng chính thức nào. Phần lớn người Đức theo đạo thiên chúa, theo đạo tin lành hoặc công giáo. Nhiều ngày lễ thiên chúa như Giáng sinh hoặc Phục sinh là những ngày nghỉ lễ pháp định, nghĩa là đa số mọi người không phải đi làm trong những ngày này. Ở Đức cũng có nhiều người theo đạo Hồi và các tôn giáo khác. Trong các trường học thường có môn Tin lành hoặc Công giáo. Ở một số trường còn có cả môn Thiên chúa giáo, đạo do thái và đạo hồi. Phụ huynh có thể quyết định việc liệu con mình có học môn tôn giáo hay không và nếu có thì con họ sẽ học tôn giáo nào.
