Một nhóm các sinh viên của trường Đại học Thuỷ lợi đã làm 1 nghiên cứu vào năm 2014 có tên " hiện trạng ô nhiễm của sông Lừ và giải pháp cải thiện " mục tiêu của nghiên cứu là làm rõ nguyên nhân và hậu quả của việc ô nhiễm nguồn nước của sông Lừ rồi từ đó đề xuất một số giải pháp để cải thiện ô nhiễm. Sông Lừ vào thời điểm đó là sông có mức độ ô nhiễm được đánh giá là rất nghiêm trọng với các chỉ số vượt mực cho phép, hoàn toàn không thể sử dụng trong sinh hoạt, sản xuất.
