Theo ghi nhận của Thanh Niên Online, rất đông người dân Việt nam và phóng viên báo chí chờ đợi quanh khu vực khách sạn 5 sao JW Marriott Hanoi (số 8 Đỗ Đức Dục, Q.Nam Từ Liêm). Tuy nhiên, đoàn xe của Tổng thống Obama đã không đi qua cổng chính của khách sạn 5 sao này mà qua phía cổng sau (phố Miếu Đầm). Trước đó khu vực này bị phong tỏa hoàn toàn từ khoảng 21 giờ. Sau vài tiếng đồng hồ trước khi Không lực 1 đến Hà Nội, một chiếc máy bay chở Ngoại trưởng Mỹ John Kerry cũng đã hạ cánh xuống sân bay Quốc tế Nội Bài. Với một phái đoàn hùng hậu như thế, chuyến thăm VIệT NAM đầu tiên này của Tổng thống Obama được đánh giá sẽ góp phần củng cố, tăng cường quan hệ Đối tác toàn diện Việt - Mỹ, triển khai những thỏa thuận cấp cao đã đạt được. Trong chuyến thăm ông Obama và các lãnh đạo cấp cao VIệT NAM cũng sẽ trao đổi các biện pháp, phương hướng thúc đẩy quan hệ cũng như về các vấn đề khu vực, quốc tế mà hai bên cùng quan tâm.
Theo chương trình, sáng nay 23.5 lễ đón chính thức Tổng thống Obama sẽ diễn ra tại Phủ Chủ tịch. Sau lễ đón là cuộc hội đàm giữa Chủ tịch nước Trần Đại Quang và Tổng thống Barack Obama. Hai nhà lãnh đạo dự kiến sẽ dự lễ ký kết một số văn kiện. Cũng trong sáng 23.5 ông Obama sẽ có cuộc tiếp xúc với Chủ tịch Quốc hội Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân trước khi tham dự họp báo chung về chuyến thăm.
Tổng thống Obama cũng đã tham quan khu di tích nhà sàn Bác Hồ - nơi gắn bó với cuộc sống của Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh trong giai đoạn 1958 - 1969.
