Theo truyền thống của Phật giáo lễ Vu-Lan cũng là mùa báo hiếu, mùa xá tội vong nhân. Khi tôn-giả Mục-Kiền-Liên vâng lời Phật dạy đến ngày rằm tháng Bảy, chư tăng tự tứ kết thúc mùa Kiết-Hạ An-Cư, dâng phẩm vật cúng dường, lập hội Vu-Lan Bồn chí tâm cầu nguyện cho cha mẹ bảy đời được siêu thoát.
