Chùa Ngọc Hoàng trước đây còn gọi là chùa Đa Kao (vùng đất nơi chùa tọa vị, xưa và nay đều được gọi là Đa Kao). Có lẽ, cái tên chùa Ngọc Hoàng ăn sâu trong tâm thức người Sài Gòn là do từ thế kỷ 19, chùa vốn là một điện thờ Ngọc Hoàng Thượng Đế.
